Heisman Winner Will Be…

We are five weeks into the college football and we have seen many players perform at a high level. Even so Heisman winner in my eyes will be Kyler Murray the quarterback from the University of Oklahoma.

He’s not a runaway favorite right now, quite a few players are still in the mix since there remains 7 more weeks in the regular season left in the college football season. They are pretty close to him some are even outperforming him in certain areas. What makes me think he will win is how he’s not just passing really well but running well too.

Murray has a completion percentage of 70.6, 1460 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, 285 rushing yards, and 4 rushing touchdowns. Heisman winners are usually quarterbacks, but not just that but quarterbacks that get it done in the air and the ground and score a lot of touchdowns doing both. Robert Griffin III, Marcus Mariota, Lamar Jackson, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, Jameis Winston, and Baker Mayfield are  7 of the past 8 winners of the Heisman and all have not just passed well but ran well in their Heisman winning seasons.

Also the better the team does the better ones chances are to win and Oklahoma is ranked number 7 in the country right now and is undefeated and if they stay undefeated they will only rise because not all 6 teams ahead of them will stay undefeated.

Murray has plenty of competition and the guys on top of the list are West Virginia quarterback Will Grier  Virginia, Ohio State running back Dwayne Haskins , Clemson running back Travis Etienne, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, University of Central Florida quarterback McKenzie Milton, Hawaii quarterback Cole McDonald, University of Kentucky running back Bennie Snell Jr., and Memphis running back  Darrell Henderson.

Cole McDonald has definitely performed the best of the quarterbacks so far with his 24 touchdowns, 2100 yards and 2 interceptions, but he’s from a lesser known school with an easier schedule than most quarterbacks in competition with him and he’s been rushing well too but nothing special enough to bolster him up to runaway status. The Rainbow Warrior is only a sophomore and if he doesn’t win this year and keeps performs like this next year I’m sure he’ll be more heavily considered.

Etienne is a great back but the competition is way too fierce with the amount of quarterbacks playing at such a high level and the amount of running backs playing at a similar level to him. Same goes for Snell. There’s been great running back play in college but no one is really standing above the rest except Henderson who only has 75 carries so he’s not getting the volume usually associated with a Heisman winning offensive player.

There still plenty of football though and a lot of guys playing at a Heisman level and that goes not just for people I mentioned but many others as well. Before we know it the season will come to an end and we will have our answer.
