This week is the last week of the regular season of the college football season and before bowl season starts only the conference championship games are left. Besides powerhouse school the University of Alabama who is a lock at this point, 9 teams are technically in the mix for those last three spots for the 4 spots in the College football playoff.
In the picture above those are the 4 teams that made the cut last year. At end of the season last year there were only 6 teams with 1 loss or less (all had 1 loss). Now there are 8 teams in the power 5 conferences and 1 serious independent that’s the University of Notre Dame that all have 1 loss or less. Also there are two Group 5 teams with 1 loss or less, the University of Central Florida and Utah State that are eligible but most likely won’t be chosen. UCF was technically in the running last year since they went undefeated but unfairly didn’t make the cut and are undefeated this year as of now as well but most likely won’t be chosen.
The top 4 teams in the A.P rankings or Associated Press right now are 1.Alabama,2. Clemson, 3.Notre Dame, 4. Michigan. The other teams in the mix for the power 5 teams are Georgia, Oklahoma, Washington State, and Ohio State. LSU is in the top 10 but have two losses and are not gonna make the cut. UCF is also in the top 10 but like said before are probably not gonna be one of the 4 selected even if they go undefeated.
Some of these teams have tough last games and some are already locks to play in their conference championships. The biggest game though that will be the biggest for taking one team off this list of playoff contenders is the Michigan vs. Ohio State rivalry game on saturday at noon. A high powered offense in Ohio State takes on the number 1 defense of Michigan that is led by former NFL coach Jim Harbaugh.
Since this year is so crowded and there will be plenty of debate over the final decision, especially if UCF isn’t chosen because there was an uproar last year when they weren’t the talk of expanding the playoffs might occur. Plenty of sports writers are already talking about playoff expansion and how it should happen and this year might seriously help it actually happen soon.
